CHRIST THE BREAD OF LIFE "I am the bread of life" (John 6:48). There are seven (7) I Am's in the Book of John, which clearly speak of seven (7) things that Christ is. While Jesus of Nazareth in the Mary body clearly came to be revealed to Israel and fulfill the law in His body, He often spoke glimmers of things to and for the church that was to come. The Book of John was the last gospel written, and was written by the Apostle John about 55 years after the Church began. Perhaps, it is just Christ living in John as John; his longer experience with the Lord and Holy Spirit mind renewal; or both. John clearly has captured a strong focus on the Lord Himself, which towers above the general focus of historical events as relayed by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Jesus had just miraculously fed the 5000 men, plus many others with five loaves and two fishes (John 6:9-10). There were four (4) groups of people that came to see Jesus afterward and He gave them all the same clear message. The first group were the seeking crowd who came seeking temporal bread and miraculous satisfaction of their physical needs. Jesus clearly told them, "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35a). Jesus told them if the came to Him they would NEVER hunger, and if they would drink of Him they would NEVER thirst (John 6:35b). Jesus was speaking in the spiritual about His eternal life and the Spirit birthing (John 6:40). The second group were the murmuring crowd who continued the conversation about Moses and the manna they received from heaven (John 6:41). Jesus again said,"I am the bread of life" (John 6:48). Jesus continued and said that, "I am the living bread" from heaven and was giving His life to save the world (John 6:51). The third group was the quarreling crowd about Jesus giving His flesh for them to eat (John 6:52). They did not understand the spiritual truth that Jesus Christ was relating to them. They were thinking only in the natural. Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say unto you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you" (John 6:53). There is NO OTHER PATH if you want to have a relationship and fellowship with Him and in Him. So, what spiritual truth is Jesus asking these people to consider? Jesus knew in the Spirit that he needed to go through Samaria to see the woman at the well at Sychar to tell her of the living water of eternal salvation (John 4:4-14). At the conclusion the disciples wanted to eat, but Jesus clearly told them that he had already eaten food that they did not know or understand (John 4:31-32). Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work" (John 4:34). Jesus wanted all groups to first know, that His flesh or food is to do the will of the Father and finish His work. Jesus wanted all groups to second know, that His blood is His Spirit, nature, and life that is Spirit-birthed in us at salvation. The life of the flesh is in the blood. We are to live in this new creation life by the Spirit, nature, and Christ-life in us. The fourth group were His disciples who claimed it was a difficult saying (John 6:60). Jesus told them, It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits NOTHING. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63). Many of His disciples walked away forever, but His chosen disciples stayed and said, "You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:66-69). Christ is the bread of life! VWritten by Dwight Davis |
