THE SCRIPTURES TESTIFY OF CHRIST

"You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me" (John 5:39).

Jesus heals a blind man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath, and the Jews sought to kill Him (John 5:1-16).   When Jesus talked further to them that God  was His Father, making Himself equal with God, they sought the more to kill Him (John 5:18).  Jesus testified how the Father had committed all judgment to the Son (John 5:22).  Jesus clearly said that the Father has granted the Son to have life in Himself and whoever would hear and believe His word would have eternal life (John 5:26,24).  Then Jesus brought up the testimony and true witness of John the Baptist (John 5:33-35).  Jesus finally told the Jews that the works that His Father gave Him to do and finish were a greater witness that the Father had sent Him (John 5:36).  Jesus told the Jews that the Father has testified that He sent Him, but they had not heard His voice nor seen Him (John 5:37).  The Jews searched the scriptures for  enlightenment and eternal life (John 5:39a).  Jesus clearly told the Jews that the scriptures testified of Him, and they were not willing to come to Him that they might have eternal life (John 5:39b-40).  The Word of God is the Word of truth and the scriptures testify of Christ – the Person of truth.

The Holy Spirit was also sent to testify of Christ (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13-15).  Jesus said that He was going away, for the Holy Spirit to come and help do that very thing (John 16:7).  The Holy Spirit takes the Word of Christ and produces faith in us (Rom. 10:17). We take that Spirit-given faith, simply believe that Word that testifies of Christ, and we are born again into the Body of Christ (Rom. 10:9-10; I Cor. 12:13).  The Holy Spirit of truth, takes the Word of truth, and those scriptures testify of Christ – the Person of truth.

Today, it is not any different.  People use scriptures in various ways.  Some are seeking answers to problems, but the scriptures testify of Christ being the answer (Col. 3:11). Some are seeking wisdom knowledge, but the scriptures testify of Christ being our wisdom and knowledge (I Cor. 1:30).  Some are seeking wisdom and power, but the scriptures testify of Christ being the wisdom and power of God (I Cor. 1:24).  That is why we preach the true gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified, for that is the gospel of the scriptures that testify of Christ.  The Holy Spirit can use that gospel message of the power of God to save lost man (I Cor. 1:18; Rom. 1:16). The scriptures testify of Jesus Christ and Him Crucified to keep us walking in the power of God (I Cor. 2:2,5).  The scriptures testify of Christ in us to keep us walking in the wisdom of God! (I Cor. 2:7, Col. 1:26-27). V
